The United States FDA has approved the first-of-its-kind corneal implant to improve near vision for presbyopic patients.
Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center, Nashville, TN, is among the first to perform this procedure, performed by Dr. Ming Wang, Harvard & MIT (MD, magna cum laude); PhD (laser physics).
Would I qualify for the procedure?
- Do you have good vision for far away (like street signs) in both eyes (with or without prior LASIK/PRK)?
- Do you only need glasses for near vision (reading glasses)?
- Are you 45 years or older?
If you answered YES to all 3 questions, KAMRA surgery may be right for you.
Press Release
Tennessee’s first-of-its-kind new eye procedure to treat aging eyes performed - 3D Laser KAMRA, a breakthrough new eye surgery to treat age-related loss of near vision, was performed today
(Nashville, TN, 6/9/15). Dr. Ming Wang, Harvard & MIT (MD,magna cum laude); PhD (laser physics), announced today that he has performed the state’s first (and one of the country’s first) newly FDA-approved procedure to treat presbyopia – 3D Laser KAMRA procedure, at Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center, Nashville, TN.
Presbyopia is the loss of the ability to change the focusing power of the eye. It occurs with normal aging and results in difficulty with near vision, generally in adults 40 to 50 years of age and older.
Up until now, no effective surgical treatment exists to treat presbyopia other than invasive lens surgery. LASIK surgery is generally reserved to improve one’s distance but not up-close vision due to aging.
Recently, U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first-of-its kind new eye surgery to treat presbyopia. “The procedure is called ‘3D Laser KAMRA’ at Wang Vision”, Dr. Wang explained, “It involves implanting a ring into the cornea to produce a pinhole effect, which enable us to improve our near vision without compromising our distance vision”.
When we implant a pinhole device such as the 3D Laser KAMRA, it focuses entrance light into a narrow beam which greatly increases the depth of focus or range of vision for our patients. The range of vison is the distance between the furtherest point that you can see to the nearest point that you can see. As we age, the range of vision naturally decreases. That is why after age 45, we could no longer read upclose and will need reading glasses, since the near point goes away from us. 3D Laser KAMRA restores the range of vision and depth of focus for our patients. It makes them feel young again because they could once again read without reading glasses!”
LASIK surgery is mainly use to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism and is thus effective in improving one’s distance vision. LASIK however does not in general address upclose reading problem. Hence, up until now, there has been no effective solution to presbyopia. As a result, our babyboomer patients (those who are over the age of 45) have been left in the sidelines of modern laser vision correction treatment.
“It used to be when someone comes to me complaining about his/her near vision problem and have to push things further to read, since we had no solution, I used to joke with my patients and tell them that as they get older, their arms are getting shorter, that is all. They have a ‘Short-arm Syndrome’. It is not their eye problem, so go to someone else, we as eye doctors could not help them”.
Until now!
Ms. Cynthia Chafin is a 48 year old project manager from Old Hickoery, TN. In recent years, she developed dependence on reading glasses which she hates. She is excited to be the first patient in the state to enjoy this breakthrough new technology. Her 3D Laser KAMRA surgery went beautifully.
Ms. Christin New is a 49 year patient from Mt. Juliet, TN, and she is the 2nd patient in the state to have the 3D Laser KAMRA procedure and her surgery was a complete success also.
Mr. Kervon Brust is a 50 year old airline operations agent from Greenbrier, TN. He is the 3rd patient in the state to have the 3D Laser KAMRA procedure. Immediately after his surgery, he could read without reading glasses! Thrilled, Mr. Brust said: “I feel like I have a bionic eye!”
Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center has been the site in recently years of introduction of new eye surgeries. Dr. Wang performed the state’s first bladeless all-laser LASIK and the first laser cataract surgery.
“We are excited to be the first again, and this time, to introduce this entirely new generation eye surgery to treat aging eyes!” Dr. Wang said: “The focus of 21st century medicine now is to improve our sight even as we age, to enable our patients see better and longer. It improves the quality of lives for our patients”.
